MURDER OF URAN HILLS, WETLANDS BY BIG GOVT, BIG BUSINESS, BIG MONEY
on #THERKBSHOW
This is the Battle To End All Battles for the life and soul of Vashi, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai.
The wetlands of Uran are being systematically destroyed, the livelihood of fishermen being callously snatched from them and village after village being decimated by the Govt itself!
Says B N Kumar, journalist, PR and Greem activist “ the hills and wetlands are being murdered! I never cried when my father passed away; but looking at this murder of Mother Earth I am weeping today”
Says Advocate Pradeep Nambiar “A murder is happening in front of our eyes; we have to prevent it now before everything dies”
The battle to save wetlands in Uran has got an impetus with environmental activists sending out a fresh appeal to the Konkan divisional commissioner and others even as reclamation of land continued without any respite during the Diwali vacation.
There are three spots mainly where debris dumping and reclamation is going on in full swing—Dastaan Phata-Jasai and two Cidco holding ponds in Dronagiri.
An accumulated 776 hectares (250 hectares at Dastaan, 289 hectares near holding pond I at Panje and 237 hectares near holding pond-II near coastal road) of wetland areas is in danger, environmentalists said. “We thank the Konkan divisional commissioner for agreeing to take up this issue. But reclamation has been going on even during the Diwali holidays,” said activist Nandkumar Pawar, who has again written to the authorities appealing them to check wetland reclamation at the earliest.
Cidco has been blaming villagers for destruction of mangroves but this doesn’t make sense,” said Pawar who heads NGO Shree Ekvira Aai Pratishtan (SEAP). “The villagers might dump construction waste but not truckloads of soil,” Pawar said.
